US vs UK Crochet Terms: Conversion Chart & How to Tell

Image
By the PLoMUS Editorial Team · Last updated October 28, 2026 · Data: Craft Yarn Council and KnitPro Quick answer: US and UK crochet use the same stitches but call them by different names. Each UK name is one step "taller" than the US name for the same stitch: US single crochet (sc) = UK double crochet (dc) US half double crochet (hdc) = UK half treble (htr) US double crochet (dc) = UK treble (tr) US treble (tr) = UK double treble (dtr) US gauge = UK tension The trap: "double crochet" and "treble" exist in both systems but mean different stitches. If you follow a UK pattern while reading the names as US stitches, every stitch comes out one step taller. The project ends up taller, looser and bigger than the designer intended, and often uses more yarn. This guide gives you a side-by-side chart, a checklist for telling which terms a pattern uses, and a safe order for converting a pattern by hand or with find-and-replace. US vs UK crochet term...

Crochet Hook Sizes Chart: mm, US Letters & Yarn Weights

Image
By the PLoMUS Editorial Team · Last updated October 27, 2026 · Data: Craft Yarn Council standards Quick answer: Go by the millimeter (mm) size. Letters and numbers like "H-8" are names, and the Craft Yarn Council says those names vary from company to company. The millimeter size is the measurement you can trust. The sizes people look up most often, per the Craft Yarn Council chart: 3.5 mm = E-4 4 mm = G-6 5 mm = H-8 5.5 mm = I-9 6 mm = J-10 Worsted (weight 4) yarn: 5.5 to 6.5 mm (I-9 to K-10½) is the suggested hook range Hook labels can be confusing. One package says "H-8," another says "5 mm," and an older hook might show only a letter. This page puts the official US size names next to their millimeter sizes, then shows which hook range goes with each yarn weight. Both tables are built from the Craft Yarn Council, the yarn industry trade group that publishes the standards its member companies set. Crochet hook sizes chart (mm to US...

Crochet Pumpkin Size Calculator: Stitches and Rows for Any Size

Image
Quick answer: A ribbed rectangle pumpkin is a flat piece of single crochet in the back loop, seamed into a tube and gathered at both ends. The number of rows sets how far around it goes: width × 3.1416 × your rows per inch. The stitches in each row run from the bottom center over the side to the top center, so they set the height. The calculator below turns the width and height you want, plus your own gauge, into a starting chain, a stitch count and a row count. By PLoMUS Editorial Team · Checked October 27, 2026 · Calculator and formulas by our team The ribbed rectangle is a common way to make a quick pumpkin for Halloween (Saturday, October 31 this year) and Thanksgiving tables. Many patterns give you one or two sizes. This page gives you the geometry instead, so you can plan a pumpkin of any size in any yarn. Read it as a starting plan, not a guarantee: ribbing stretches, stuffing pushes the fabric outward, and how hard you cinch the ends changes the shape. Those e...
